These days the biggest walkabout sawmills can be taken on wheels - they are too heavy to be carried, and too complicated to be re-built and taken to pieces again each time - often to within dragging distance of the trees or logs.

Our wood-mizer LT40 allows many fallen or felled trees in woods as well as trees from gardens or hedges to be milled into valuable timber for furniture making, building or fencing, instead of being chopped up for firewood.

The Mizer can even cut veneer for cabinet making.

Since the days of the first ‘walkabout sawmill’, when a small engine, blades and bench could be carried into the woods, developments have been thought out and added to the machines to enable them to cut better, waste less and handle bigger logs.

But the original idea is still there:

how to process a potentially useful and valuable tree into something that could be carried from near to where it has fallen without needing expensive heavy equipment, or incurring haulage costs to take it to a sawmill and back again.

Milling the timber more or less where it lies saves the expense and inefficiency of hauling logs, with all the ‘waste’ attached, to a distant sawmill - and then bringing it back again.

It is often the case that the owner of the wood  (or the cabinet maker or joiner who will use it) likes to be there to oversee the sawing,  so plans can be changed and more can be got out of the log in a way that cannot be done if the timber is simply sent away to be milled.

We welcome our customers’ input at the milling stage, especially if complicated shapes are to be cut for timber framing etc.

Hydraulics for the log handling and a powerful compact diesel engine allow these machines to be worked by one person, though through-put and economic viability is improved if there is human and mechanical help around.

All this is more easily done where the tree lies, or nearer to it, and the sawdust and waste which is not useful for anything else can be left behind.

With the power and sophistication of our sawmill, a very large amount of timber can be processed in a day.

Also, a much-loved garden tree can be carefully milled up, stacked and dried and made into something by which it will be remembered.
